Fannie Mae FNM and Freddie Mac FRE stocks traded much lower yesterday and gave back some of the big gains they saw earlier this week as investors worry about the mortgage giants’ clouded future within the temporarily low interest rate environment.
Shares of FNM and FRE ended down 7.2% and 5.3% respectively. That was a second straight session of losses after both stocks gained more than 20% on Monday. The Treasury also said it would loosen requirements that the companies shrink their huge mortgage portfolios.
